This briefing on investing into Australia was successfully held on 4 September 2025 in Tokyo.
This educational session provided ANREV members with valuable insights into the current investment landscape in Australia. Our speakers and panelists covered key themes such as macroeconomic and market trends, opportunities and challenges across different asset classes, regulatory developments, and capital flow dynamics. The session also included a discussion on strategies for accessing Australian real estate markets and managing associated risks.

Speakers

Hugh Macdonald is the Head of Capital Advisors, Asia Pacific for CBRE. He is responsible for all of CBRE’s Capital Advisors teams in the region, operating across Singapore, Korea, Australia, Japan and China.
Hugh brings over two decades of experience from prior roles at Deutsche Bank, Citi, Morgan Stanley and Bankers Trust and a long investment banking career across Real Estate, Gaming, Leisure and Lodging.
Prior to joining CBRE, Hugh was the Head of Investment Banking Coverage and Advisory for Australia and New Zealand with Deutsche Bank in Sydney. He has significant global and cross border experience having worked in Europe and across Asia and is a multi-product specialist (M&A, Financing, Capital Markets and Equity Derivatives).
He is also renowned for his expertise in various financial products and has successfully originated and executed numerous high-profile transactions across Asia Pacific, showcasing his strong cross-border experience.

Stuart McCann is the Head of Capital Advisors and International Capital, Pacific, for CBRE.
He provides strategic advisory services, including capital raising and capital partnering services, for Australian and New Zealand based corporate and institutional investors and developers.
Stuart has raised over AUD12 billion of equity into the ANZ market over the past 5 years, including being involved in a number of the larger investments made by Japanese investors entering the Australian market. Key managers and developers Stuart has raised capital for, including Mirvac, ESR, Stockland, MA Financial, Ashe Morgan, Investa and Oxford as examples.
Stuart has over 17 years of commercial real estate experience, with a focus on Australia. He was previously based in Singapore for 10 years and has established strong relationships in the Asian markets.

Joined the Company in 2013 with 8 years of industry experience. Matthias joined DWS in 2013 as the Head of Strategy, Real Estate. In June 2019, he was appointed to Chief Investment Officer, Real Estate for Europe also covering APAC in a caretaker capacity since January 2021. Matthias has relocated from Frankfurt to Sydney effective from March 1st, 2024 to have a greater focus on the APAC region. He is chairing the APAC RE Investment Committee, co-chairing the Global Investment Committee and is member of the Europe & APAC Real Estate Leadership Team. Prior to joining DWS, Matthias served as a senior analyst at AXA Investment Managers, London. Previously, he was an analyst with focus on Germany and CEE at Invesco Real Estate GmbH. Matthias started his career as a portfolio analyst with focus on Germany and Switzerland at Investment Property Databank Ltd., London.
Matthias holds a post-graduate engineering degree from TU Dortmund University.

Darren has over 26 years’ experience in the logistics, industrial and infrastructure sectors and has held senior positions at leading international companies including ~12 years in Property Development/Supply Chain roles on the customer side, at Toll and CSR.
Prior to founding LogiSPACE, Darren was Head of Australia and New Zealand for one of Asia’s largest Logistics Developers, LOGOS Property Group, and drove the growth of the ANZ portfolio and development pipeline to in excess of A$15bn of Assets under Management.
Whilst at LOGOS Darren was responsible for teams overseeing the acquisition and development of ~3,400,000sqm of Logistics SPACE, including leading LOGOS’ acquisition of the 283Ha Moorebank Intermodal Precinct in Sydney NSW.
Further projects of note include complex M&A of operating companies and joint ventures in each of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane with institutional and corporate land owners.

David brings over 27 years of experience in the property development and investment sector, and currently holds the position of Executive General Manager, Acquisitions & Capital Transactions at Stockland, one of Australia’s leading diversified property groups.
Since joining Stockland in 2014, David has been instrumental in driving the execution of strategic acquisitions and partnership initiatives across the portfolio. This has significantly contributed to the expansion of Stockland’s development pipeline, particularly within the living and logistics sectors across Australia.
Prior to joining Stockland, David spent 16 years at Mirvac in senior leadership roles in Development and Acquisitions.
