This webinar session looked into the growing sector of multifamily in Asia Pacific. At this session, Emily Relf of Knight Frank, Shu Watanabe of Nuveen Real Estate, Adam Pillay of Greystar and Angela Buckley of Mirvac shared with us their insights on multifamily within the region, with a specific focus on Japan and Australia.

Adam Pillay
Senior Managing Director, Investment Management - Asia Pacific
Greystar

Adam Pillay is the Senior Managing Director, Investment Management, Asia Pacific, where he leads the investment management platform for Greystar’s operations across China, Japan, Australia and Singapore. In addition to this role, Adam is also the senior managing director of investor relations for Greystar, with responsibility for leading the company’s investor relations and capital raising teams globally. 

Adam joined Greystar in 2017 from J.P. Morgan Asset Management – Global Real Assets, where he was the platform specialist for the Asia-Pacific region, leading the formulation and structuring of the Asia-Pacific real estate strategies. He also supported the European real estate team with capital raising from major North American clients. Prior to joining J.P. Morgan, Adam was a vice president at CIM Group, where he worked closely with global institutional investors to form and structure the equity financing of real estate and infrastructure investment products across direct, co-investment, and commingled fund strategies. Before joining CIM, Adam spent eight years with Macquarie Capital, where he focused on real estate private capital transactions globally. He holds a bachelor of science degree in genetics and a master of commerce in international finance from the University of New South Wales, Australia.
 

Emily Relf
Head of Outbound Capital, Asia Pacific
Knight Frank

Emily focuses on uncovering the best investment opportunities in the UK, Europe and the US for cross-border investors. Based in Singapore since 2015, she has forged strong relationships with institutional investors, private equity funds, and high net worth individuals throughout the region, taking Asia’s most aggressive capital out of the region. Emily is also an expert commentator on living sectors within the Asia Pacific region, having worked with Asian capital on student accommodation and multifamily deals worldwide.

Angela Buckley
General Manager, Build to Rent
Mirvac

Angela leads Mirvac's Build to Rent BTR (Multi-Family) function, generating strategic direction for business activities and continuing growth of the business towards a medium term target of 5,000 apartments. She oversees the Australian Build to Rent Club (ABTRC) and future third party capital relationships for Mirvac in this sector, being accountable for the financial performance of each project. Mirvac is positioned as Australia's market leader and a first mover in BTR through end-to-end acquisition, development and long term ownership of quality designed properties, specifically with renters in mind. This includes managing properties through Mirvac's operating platform, LIV, which seeks to generate ongoing, long-term sources of income through a unique rental experience which is resident focused, providing significant amenities and services. Mirvac officially opened its first BTR asset, LIV Indigo, (315 apartments) in Sydney Olympic Park in September 2020. The current BTR pipeline has a further four projects encompassing 1,800 apartments in Melbourne and Brisbane to be delivered between 2022 and 2025.

Angela has been with Mirvac for more than seven years, with her most recent role as General Manager, Capital Transactions. She is an accomplished real estate professional and leader with strategic, executional and operational experience across retail, industrial, office and mixed-use asset classes. Angela has led cross-functional teams through a multi-billion-dollar portfolio of acquisitions, disposals, joint ventures and new business development projects, alongside establishment of investment strategies and business transformation projects.

Angela holds a Bachelor of Business Management (Real Estate & Development) from the University of Queensland and commenced her property career as a valuer.

Shu Watanabe
Managing Director, Head of Japan
Nuveen Real Estate

Shu is Managing Director, Head of Japan Real Estate at Nuveen Real Estate who is responsible for and leads all direct real estate investments in Japan. Shu joined Nuveen in 2016 completing Nuveen’s debut investment in Japan investing in Ginza office. Since then, the direct real estate exposure in Japan expanded to $1.2bn in 4 years, primarily focused on core assets comprised of multifamily and logistics. Shu also serves as the fund manager for the Tokyo Multifamily Partnership launched in 2018 with over $800m AUM.

Prior to joining Nuveen, Shu worked for JP Morgan Asset Management in Singapore, where he was a fund manager for its Tokyo Recovery Fund from inception in 2011 until its successful exit in 2015. Previous roles include fund manager at Aviva Investors, M&A and private placement roles at Macquarie Capital and Morgan Stanley in Japan. Shu started his career at one of the largest Japanese conglomerate, Itochu Corporation.

Shu graduated with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University.
